Start with your curiosity

The ETH Student Project House (SPH) supports students in exploring and building on their curiosity. We provide students with a pressure-free environment that triggers inspiration, discussion and hands-on (and often messy) exploration so that they can develop a mindset geared towards creating, innovating and leading impactful change.

FAQ

Who can use the SPH?

The Makerspace is open to all ETH students (age 18 or older) from their first day at ETH. The co-working space is reserved for projects only, but any ETH student who has passed their first year exams can start a project and invite partners they need to make their idea a reality.

Until what time is the building open?

Usually, the doors are open from 8:00 to 20:00. If you have 24/7 access you can enter at any time. Make sure to check our Opening Hours.

Can I work on my course-related projects and study in your space?

No. The Makerspace and co-working space are for non-curricular work only.

Why do I have to do the check-in at the Welcome Desk?

We can allocate resources more effectively if we know which rooms are used most. We also collect check-in statistics to help us plan and report on new offerings.

Can I start a project and how?

You can start a project as soon as you have passed your first year exams at ETH. Anyone can join your team and help turn your idea into reality. Just book a curiosity session to find an idea or an onboarding session and you are ready to go.

If I don't have my own idea, can I still participate in the SPH?

Yes! Many projects are looking for team members, check out the physical recruitment boards in our space. Your skill set may be just what they need. Do you like tinkering and helping people with their ideas? Become a Makerspace or Digital Makerspace Manager! Or just take a look at some of our tools and machines. Make something yourself.

How can I get access to the co-working spaces?

Join an existing project or start your own! Find out more: sph.ethz.ch/find-your-idea

What is the difference between the General Introduction and a bookable tour?

The General Introduction enables you to use our Makerspace and registers you as a Makerspace user. You will get a general overview and learn about the rules and regulations necessary to be a Makerspace user, and you will be able to attend further Machine Introductions that you wish to learn.

Can you give me information about staff or project members whereabouts, projects, and schedules?

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide information of this sensitive nature. However, we would be happy to direct you to the appropriate contact channel. You can get in touch with us on our website, via the chatbot, on Slack or by email.

How do i get 24/7 access to the SPH?

Ask your coach for access.

Why does my student ID not work for 24/7 access, even though I applied for it?

Update your Student ID on a terminal. Not the one that prints the date on the card, but the one that updates the RFID. You can find them on the ground floor of the HPP building at ETH Hönggerberg or in the CLA building at ETH Zentrum. Find out more: https://ethz.ch/staffnet/en/service/eth-card/validity-period-validation/validation-terminal-locations.html

Why do I still not have 24/7 access?

If you have attended the onboarding, have an ETH student card and have waited more than 30 days, please contact your coach and ask if you are on the project sheet. Otherwise, please consider the above criteria and make sure you meet them first before contacting us. If the nature of your project requires 24/7 access to the Makerspace, please discuss this with your coach.
